Jeff and Michelle’s Silverthorne, Colorado Wedding

Flowers: Petal and Bean

Dress:  d’Anelli Bridal Special Occasion and Tuxedo

Venue: Silverthorne Pavilion

Planning: Affordable Mountain Events

Cake and Catering: Gilchrist Catering

Jeff and Michelle are a really fun couple. I created their engagement photos last fall here in Breckenridge. They hired me almost a year before their wedding and it has been a lot of fun being involved in their planning process. I really enjoy photographing local weddings. As much as I love destination weddings, it is great being able to work with local vendors and venues that I consider friends.

Chris and Angie’s Breckenridge Ski Wedding

Location: Breckenridge Ski Area

Venue: Mountain Thunder Lodge

Chris and Angie had a really fun idea for a wedding: ski down from the top of Breckenridge Ski Area together to their ceremony at Mountain Thunder Lodge. Finding a photographer who was willing and able to go on that adventure with them could have been a challenge, so I am really glad they gave me a call.

Mary and Ben’s Christmas Themed Illinois Wedding

Venue: Fishermen’s Inn, Elburn, Illinois

I went to college with the groom, Ben, many years ago before I was ever really practicing photography. I was delighted when he and his fiance, Mary, asked me to photograph their winter wedding in Elburn, Illinois. The surprising thing was that despite being in the middle of December near Chicago, temperatures were warm and their was still green grass all around the venue. That didn’t stop them from creating a beautiful winter themed wedding.

Lisa and Salvador’s Wedding on Oahu, Hawaii

Venue: Turtle Bay Resort
Location: Oahu, Hawaii
Flowers: North Shore Weddings and Flowers
Hair and Makeup: Sarah from Whik’d Hairstyling & Makeup
Officiant: Jon Kuahiwi Moniz from Ae ‘Ike Hawaiian Wedding Ceremony

I was introduced to Lisa and Salvador through a mutual photographer friend. I was delighted when they asked me to photograph their destination wedding at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Destination weddings are a lot of fun to photograph, but they require a very particular skill set. For starters, it is important for the photographer to be very self contained. That means having everything I need including backup equipment in my carry on bag to avoid being separated from my gear. I also need to have the computer equipment with me in order to back up images before getting home. Check out my blog posts on what I pack, and how I back up in the field.

Lisa and Salvador’s wedding was particular fun to photograph. We were graced with just a bit of rain that resulted in a beautiful rainbow just behind their ceremony cite. The folks at Turtle Bay said that happens fairly often on this part of the Hawaii. Despite packing light for a destination wedding, I still managed to bring enough tools to do some off camera lighting at the reception, which I think really helped add to the drama of such a beautiful venue.

Ellen and Greg’s Engagement Session

Ellen and Greg hired me to photograph their wedding for September of this year. They came out to Breckenridge, Colorado for me to take their engagement photos here with the snow covered mountains as a backdrop.

Jeff and Michelle’s Breckenridge Colorado Engagement Session

Michelle and Jeff asked me to photograph their wedding next summer, so they came out to the mountains this past fall with me to photograph their engagement photos in Breckenridge, Colorado. They brought their rather shy dog with that they rescued a few weeks earlier, and I think the photos of the three of them turned out really well.

Throwback Thursday Wedding Photography

Recently I was thinking back to my first time at the WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) in Las Vegas back in 2008. I had only been photographing for a few years, and it was my first time at a conference with thousands of wedding and portrait photographers getting to meet and listen to long time industry pros. Topics covered everything from lighting to business.

a lot of the existing barriers to new photographers in the industry had seemingly disappeared overnight

However, there was a recurring theme throughout the entire conference, especially in the business classes. It was that photographers should stick to their guns and charge what they think they were worth and not compromise artistically or financially. It made sense in the context of the time, when digital cameras were finally able to exceed the quality of film, and a lot of the existing barriers to new photographers in the industry had seemingly disappeared overnight. The result was a market flooded with new competition that were able to work with low overheads on weekends while holding other jobs, and as a result they were able to sell their services for a lot less than what established photographers had been charging.
