My favorite Weddings of 2010
I know we are already several weeks into 2011 already, but I thought this might be a great time to do a little recap of my favorite weddings of 2010. What follows are images from a few of my most memorable weddings of the last year.
Tonya and Brandon on Snowmobiles
When Brandon called me and told me that he and Tonya were having their wedding at the top of Georgia Pass on snowmobiles, and asked me if I wanted to be their photographer, it didn’t take me long to say yes.
This couple really knew how to have fun. I especially liked the white “bridal” snowsuit and the bow-tie that Brandon wore over his jacket.
Sarah and Issac Know How to Swing
I always like it when I have the chance to go back to my home state of Illinois to photograph a wedding. That was the case with Issac and Sarah. They are a super fun couple who agreed to have some formal photos taken on a playground that was adjacent to the beautiful park where they had there ceremony.
It is always fun for me when couples like to do something a little out of the ordinary for the sake of photography. I think doing something like playing on a swing makes people more relaxed, and makes the photos a little more interesting.
Brent and Amy: Modern and Classic
Brent and Amy are live in San Fransisco, but got married right here in Colorado, only a few miles from my home. I got really excited when they told me they love black and white because it gave me the chance to go back to my roots in photography.
Black and white photography is not as simple as pressing the “black and white” button on a computer. To get the most out of black and white, I have to think about the image before I even press the shutter. It take a certain quality of light to make an excellent black and white photo.
In addition to my normal camera, I also use a special camera that only captures infrared light. IR images, like the one at the right, have a very unique quality about them that cannot be duplicated in post production.
Amber and Daniel: Homecoming
This couple actually met while living in Breckenridge several years earlier, and decided to come back to Breck here for their wedding. It was a lot of fun exploring some of their old haunts with them. This was also the first time anyone has asked me if I could do some of their formal portraits in the Gold Pan Saloon, famous for supplying rough and tumble gold miners with whiskey since the 1800’s.
It was a lot of fun photographing this couple and their small wedding of only 30 or so people. They started with a ceremony at Sapphire Point overlooking Lake Dillon and the Ten Mile Range. From there we proceeded to their reception in Blue River, making sure to stop along the way to photograph along a river bank, the Gold Pan, and some historic buildings on Main Street Breckenridge.
Lily and Charlie in Amazing Technicolor
For a little change of pace from the black and white images, I have to mention Lily and Charlie’s wedding at Keystone Ranch. The colors for this wedding were absolutely perfect. Everything was amazing and vibrant.
The staff at Keystone Ranch were kind enough to let us borrow a few golf carts to take the girls out to one of the old ghost towns on the golf course for photos. Yes, that’s right, there are actually ghost towns in the middle of our golf courses here in the mountains. For the guys, we borrowed some clubs and posed for photos out on the driving range.
Amber and Kerby in North Carolina
Amber sent me an email last year and asked if I would be willing to coming out to North Carolina and shoot a wedding on an apple orchard and historic inn dating back to the Civil War. Once again, it was a pretty quick answer of yes.
The location was amazing. A true photographer’s paradise of historic buildings, hedge labyrinths, natural beauty, and a couple who liked to try a few creative ideas for photography. The only down side was that this Colorado boy wasn’t use to the hot humid weather of North Carolina in August, but it was so worth it.
2010 was such a blast, I cannot wait for this spring when the 2011 weddings start.
