Andrea and David’s Wedding

Andrea and David asked me to be part of their small intimate wedding at the Lodge at Breckenridge. They were a great fun couple to work with and the winter weather really cooperated for us making for some relatively warm temperatures and some great views of the mountains.

MJ and Pete’s Wedding – Laguna Beach California

Less than a month after travelling to D.C. to photograph a wedding, I was invited to photograph another wedding in Laguna Beach, California. Pete and MJ had planned one of the coolest weddings I have ever attended. It was a wedding on the beach right before sunset followed by a small reception on the rooftop bar at The Hotel, La Casa Del Camino. This was my fifth destination wedding of 2009, but it was my first on a beach.

The only thing I didn’t like about this wedding was returning to all the snow in Colorado after spending the weekend on the beach.

This past fall I had the pleasure of travelling to Washington D.C. to photograph an old friend’s wedding. I’ve known Hideki since high school and when we asked me to come to D.C. to photograph his wedding to Tomoko, I was honored. This has been the 4th wedding I have traveled to photography outside of Colorado in the past few months, and it was a blast. The bride, Tomoko, as well as several friends and family members are from Japan, which gave me another great opportunity to meet people from another culture. For anyone who knows me well, they know that this is one of my favorite things about photography.

It was a lot of fun. After photographing them getting ready at the hotel in Roslyn, we drove over to the Lincoln Memorial where Hideki had proposed to Tomoko to do some photos there. Even though the memorial steps were very busy, when we walked around to the back side of the memorial, we had the place to ourselves.

After photographing at the memorial, we went back to the Top of the Town in Roslyn for the ceremony and reception. The venue overlooked all of D.C. and the Potomac.

I was fortunate to be invited to photograph this couples intimate wedding which they celebrated with their children here in Breckenridge, Colorado. They held their ceremony along French Gulch in front of a mountainside covered in Aspen trees. Although it snowed for the last few days, the day of their wedding was one of those perfect Colorado bluebird days without a cloud in the sky. I’ve been asked to photograph a lot of important moments in people’s lives over the years, but there aren’t too many things more terrifying than a proposal. Not only do I have to get it right the first time, but a proposal only lasts for a few moments. On top of that, as a photographer, I need to be ready without tipping off the bride. I was definately excited when Paul asked me to photograph him proposing to his girlfriend Ligon . And I am happy to add that she said yes.

I was recently speaking with a fellow photographer regarding our favorite weddings. It is actually something I hadn’t thought about before, but I it turns out I didn’t have to think long. My favorite wedding was one I wasn’t even invited to much less had a plan for photographing.

Last spring I had spent a few weeks in Nepal. One morning I went on a tour of the small village of Banepa. Afterwards, instead of taking the bus, I decided to walk with our guide back to the town of
Dhulikhel, where I was staying. He returned to the hotel, and I decided to head back to the main area of town to use the internet. As so often happens in Nepal, the electricity was out, and the internet cafes were closed. Since I had my camera with me I decided to make the most of my time and explore some of the back alleys of
Dhulikhel. Once I got off the main street with the never ending auditory assault of the constant car horns, things became much quieter. I could hear some people playing instruments down another alley and I decided to investigate.

When I found the source of the music, I wasn’t sure what was going on. There were about a dozen musicians dressed in red in the street, and maybe another 100 people in the yard of a large house. I didn’t speak much Nepali. And what I did speak was mostly limited to arranging a hotel room or ordering a meal. So, I looked for a someone who looked like they were school aged. When traveling abroad, I have found that most people have studied english in schools, but tend to forget it as they get older.

I met a boy who told me that there was a wedding happening, and he then introduced me to his father. It turns out his father was related to the groom, and he invited me to join the wedding party. It was really a huge honor to find myself in a small town in a country that I had only just arrived in, being allowed to join in such an important moment in this family’s life.

One of the best ways to experience another culture is to actively participate in their lives and ceremonies, and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a better way to do this than to be involved with a wedding. My favorite thing about photographing weddings is being allowed in to one of the most important things that two people will likely experience together. However this wedding was truly a new experience for me.

Weddings in the West are typically happy affairs in which the couple has known each other for years, and they can’t wait to finally get married. I had found out that this couple had only met a few weeks before the wedding, and only briefly. The groom looked nervous the entire time, and the bride was practically in tears during the ceremony. It was a little unnerving to say the least, but I tried to keep an open mind. A few days later, when I met up with some Nepalis my age, they were able to better explain what was going on. First they had explained to me, how much they appreciated their families finding there spouses for them, and how terrifying it must be to have to find our own here. I hadn’t really thought of things that way before, and I recalled how terrifying it was to propose to my wife. They also explained the crying bride. In Hindu culture, when a woman is married, she ceases to become part of the woman’s family and becomes part of her husbands family. So, her not being upset at the wedding would be a sign of disrespect to her family. In fact the woman is usually very happy about the marriage, but showing happiness on the wedding day is considered unacceptable. I did get the chance to see the same thing at another wedding I was at in Nepal a week later with a better understanding of the culture, and it was a lot different. Particularly because I was able to meet the bride the next day, and could see how happy she was compared to the day before.

I would have to refer to this as the “ultimate destination wedding.” At least it was for me. This wedding really let me experience the culture of Nepal first hand. I got to meet people and see things that I might not have otherwise had the chance to. The family welcomed me like I was one of their own. I got to experience traditional Nepali food (the taste as well as the consequences,) as well as the local homemade liquor, roxi, which not surprisingly after tasting it was brought to the wedding in plastic bottle which looks suspiciously like antifreeze containers. Best of luck to the Srestha family who really made my first few days in Nepal ones to remember always.

Columbia River Wedding

A good friend of mine asked me to come photograph her wedding outside of Portland this past weekend. Not only did I have a lot of fun, their location both inside and out was absolutely gorgeous. Tons of waterfalls, victorian decor, and great lighting, not to mention how fun the couple was, made this wedding an absolute pleasure to photograph. I’m posting a few photos from the wedding.

Six Questions for Every Photographer

Your wedding is a once in a lifetime event. So how do you go about picking a photographer for something that is so new to you? These six questions should help.

Am I hiring a specific photographer, or can you send out anyone from the studio?
There are some advantages to hiring a big studio. For example, if the photographer is sick, they can probably find someone else to cover the wedding. However, be careful of bait and switch tactics. Some very large studios may show you the portfolios of their best photographers and then send newer, less experienced people to actually photograph your wedding. Also, you should be able to meet with the actual photographer and not just an assistant or secretary before putting down a deposit. (see the next question)
What is the photographer’s personality like?
Most professional photographers have excellent skills with a camera, and most will do a fine job of photographing your wedding. What you should really look for is personality. Do you want a photographer who is a real go getter and will round up friends and relatives for portraits without having to be asked, or do you want one that is quite and unobtrusive who will get great candids without making people feel uncomfortable? You really need to sit down with your photographer and let him or her know what style you prefer.
What is in the photographer’s portfolio?
Every photographer has a portfolio that features their work. Although portfolios usually are limited to the best work the photographer has, it is an excellent way to see what he or she likes the most about their work. They will also show off their most stylish and creative work. Think of portfolios as a way to see the photographer’s potential.
Will the photographer be involved every step of the way, from pre-wedding planning all the way through album design?
Many photographers consider themselves done after the proofs are delivered. Unfortunately this is one of the times you need his or her guidance most. Having never designed an album before, you’re stuck with three or four hundred pictures to chose from. A photographer should be willing to sit down with you and help to make sure your album tells a story of your wedding, and doesn’t just become a jumble of pictures.
What kind of value do I get?
Unfortunately one of the first questions I typically hear is, “How expensive are you?” Finances are certainly an issue these days, but rather than simply consider the dollar amount, take time to consider the value. How much are you really getting for your money? Also, are you being asked to chose between packages that have more things than you really want? Almost all photographers will be willing to work with you if you are on a budget, so price should be one of the last things you worry about.
How do you archive my photos?
Now that digital photography is the new standard, I’ve gotten this question a lot. People who have experienced a computer crash know the dangers of storing all of your computer files in one location. Rest assured that your images are as safe as they can possibly be at Timothy Faust Photography. Five complete copies of your photos are kept. Three on-site, and another copy is kept off location (in case of fire or flood.)
1. Two copies are kept on a pair of duplicate hard drives (for you technofiles this system is called a RAID 1 mirrored reduntant array.)
2. A third copy is kept on a third hard disk in my computer.
3. A fourth copy is kept on an archival DVD stored in a separate part of the studio.
4. The fifth copy is kept on a portable hard drive that is kept in a secure offsite location, so in case of a catostrophic event at the studio your photos are still safe.
5. Also, a DVD will all of your images is availbe to purchase and keep. This DVD also included a license to make prints of the images yourself.
